Shek Tong Tsui

Jeremy's tribute to Master Fan Ho's famous piece "As Evening Hurries By". The two photos were taken at the same spot, the only thing that hasn't changed much is the tram tracks. Back in the days, the waterfront was swarming with coolies, mostly from Chiu Chow. They offloaded the bags of rice from the cargo boats to the warehouses, one bag could weigh more than 100kg, still they made it look easy...

Ask anyone who grew up in this neighbourhood about their favourite place, and they will bring you here. "We'd run down from the hillside, pass the tram tracks, and off to the promenade…" Ever so popular today, now that the old piers of the wholesale food market have made way for playgrounds and jogging treks. Who knows, one day, you can walk all the way along the water from here to Central.

Did you know that in the 1920's Hill Road was a hot and happening place? At its peak, there were more than 50 brothels and 20 restaurants here. Until after the war, the road was a bustling local hotspot with Dai Pai Dongs and street peddlers. Today, it's the flyover that brings people here. Play or pray, there's something for everyone, from outdoor cinema to the annual three-day Ghost Festival.

Yung Kee Noodles

Yung Kee is one of the most popular noodle shops in the neighbourhood. It is also one of the oldest, years of hard work poured into its steadfast reputation. "You can't believe how good business was! I still remember the days when factory workers had to run extra shifts and their bosses ordered food to keep them happy," says Mr. Yung, referring to the days of HK's blossoming plastic flower industry, when Li Ka Shing's famous first factory was right here in Shek Tong Tsui.
