World's Largest double-deck Tram Fleet

When Hongkong Tramways was founded, the 26 tramcars of the first fleet were all single-deck. After almost 100 years, we now own and operate a fleet of 163 tramcars which includes 2 antique tramcars. It is the world's largest fleet of double-deck tramcars still in operation, carrying an average of 240,000 passengers every day.

We now have:

  • A devoted workforce of 700
  • 161 Passenger trams
  • 2 Antique trams
  • 2 Tram depots, i.e. Whitty Street Depot and Sai Wan Ho Depot
  • 6 tram routes (totally 30km) providing tram service between Shau Kei Wan, Happy Valley and Kennedy Town
  • 123 tram stops from Shau Kei Wan to Kennedy Town. The tram stops are located at an interval of around 250 metres on average

In 2000, Hongkong Tramways introduced the brand new metal body trams which were designed and manufactured by our internal engineering team. Apart from the complete new outlook and compartment, the new trams provide our passengers with a more comfortable traveling experience. Different facilities and equipment were installed to upgrade the tramcars. The success of the metal body trams marked an important milestone in the history of Hongkong Tramways and further reinforced our commitment to make continuous efforts to improve our tram facilities and service standard in the future.

Safety and Reliability are our Top Priorities

Safety and reliability have always been the top priorities of Hongkong Tramways. We have taken an initiative to enhance our trams' and tram tracks' operational efficiency and reliability to ensure maximum safety for our passengers. Some highlights of our upgrading programmes are:-

  • Replacement of all PVC insulating power cable by low smoke halogen free cable
  • Installation of Driver's Vigilance Device and emergency stop system
  • Replacement of conventional drum type mechanical tram speed controller by a programmable logic controller integrated with resistor bank and traction grade contactors
  • Installation of main circuit breaker for over current protection
  • Installation of automatic track switching control to increase the safety level of tram turning at tram track junctions
  • Conversion from Single Blade Point to Double Blade Point to minimize the possibility of derailment at the point of tram track

Apart from the improvements of hardware, Hongkong Tramways is conducting various safety-training courses for all front-line motormen and inspectors to maintain a high level of safety awareness.

Environmental Friendliness

Tram is one of the most environmentally friendly means of transportation in Hong Kong, which does not produce any pollutant.

Apart from our contribution in keeping Hong Kong's air clean in the past years, Hongkong Tramways has been committed to reduce noise pollution to a minimum by introducing the thermit welding technology. The seamless rail welding greatly reduces noise when compared to the fishplate rail joint adopted before. In our 30-kilometer track system, more than 8 kilometers are newly-constructed tracks connected through thermit welding process. The rest of the tracks will be replaced in phases.

Hongkong Tramways also carries out a regular maintenance program to replace all worn traction gears and resilient wheel rubber of the tramcars with the objective of reducing running noise.
