Hongkong Tramways Uses Octopus

Hong Kong, August 16, 2001 Hongkong Tramways Limited today announces the usage of Octopus System for the whole tram fleet.

A total of 161 trams have now been installed with Octopus readers. Passengers can pay for their tram trips, without the hassle of finding coins, by simply beeping their Octopus cards at the readers. Appropriate fares will be deducted and the remaining value stored in the cards will also be displayed simultaneously.

"Apart from providing convenience to passengers, Octopus can probably lift tram passenger volume leading to better operation results", Mr. T. K. Wong, General Manager of Hongkong Tramways Limited said.

As an alternative to Octopus cards, passengers can freely choose to pay tram fare by either coins or monthly tickets. Half fares also are available to senior citizens and children holding specific Octopus cards.
