Hongkong Tramways Kicks Off
Centenary Free Rides for Charities and Tourists

Hong Kong, July 2, 2004 Serving Hong Kong since 1904, Hongkong Tramways celebrates its 100 years of operation this July. As part of Tramways' centenary celebration, the company is organising free antique tram rides for local charitable organisations and tourists during the month. The centenary free ride programme was kicked off at Hongkong Tramways' Whitty Street Depot today.

Officiating at the kick-off ceremony were Hongkong Tramways' Director and General Manager Mr Frankie Yick, artistes Ms Yumiko Cheng, Ms Stephanie Cheng, Ms Yan Ng and Ms Minnie Cheung. The officiating guests also joined a group of RTHK volunteers and children from St James' Settlement at a tram depot tour and antique tram ride with RTHK2's programme hosts.

Speaking at the kick-off ceremony, Director and General Manager Frankie Yick said, "Hongkong Tramways has been serving Hong Kong people and tourists from around the world since 1904. The centenary free rides for charities and tourists represent our commitment to Hong Kong and we hoped that both locals and tourists can share with us our joy for this special occasion."

Local charitable organisations pre-registered with Hongkong Tramways can enjoy free tram rides aboard an antique tram from 10:00-11:30 or 14:00-15:30 daily during the month of July. Meanwhile, tourists can also take advantage of the offer nightly from July 5 to 31 if they patronize Star Ferry's Harbour Tour or spend HK$200 or above at Times Square.

Apart from the Centenary free rides, Hongkong Tramways is organising a series of commemorative programmes, including the Centenary of Hong Kong special stamps, the Centenary drawing and photo-taking competitions, launch of Tramways' Centenary tramcars and souvenir ticket set etc.
